Andalucia offers diverse habitats for birdwatching throughout the year including mountains, wetlands, coastal areas and forests. The central location of La Atalaya offers ease of access to many different habitats. At any time of year many types of bird can be seen but spring is exceptional for the opportunity to spot species that have been wintering in the area as well as those arriving for the summer. The limestone environment of the nearby Subbetica National Park provides habitat for birds such as Bonelli’s and Royal Eagles, Griffon Vultures, Peregrine Falcons and Eagle Owls. During the summer months Golden Orioles and Bee Eaters visiting from Africa can be spotted in the olive groves while Flamingos are present almost all year round in Europe’s second largest colony in the salt water lagoon at Fuente de Piedra near Antequera. This is the largest natural lake on the Iberian Peninsula where over 170 species of birds have been recorded.
